Traditions & Blessings
As a child, I can remember thinking that my family didn’t have any traditions. I thought we were so dull & so ordinary. Five hundred miles away from the place I now call home, my family gathered for an Easter feast. Throughout the house, you could smell ham & my grandmother’s potatoes, but better yet were the sounds of laughter that bounced off of every wall — loud & snorty laughter.
My family is funny.
Someone always has a new joke or story to tell and before you know it, they are crossing their legs trying not to pee their pants & wiping the tears from their eyes. After this, there are always games. The children head outside to play ball while the adults gather to play the newest board game in Aunt Tracey’s arsenal of fun. Sound boring to you? I guess you’ve never seen my grandparents do physical comedy while playing Guesstures.
I do believe that our family legacy will be that no matter what was going on in our lives, we were still able to laugh. When you’re with the ones you love the most, you can forget about the outside world for awhile.
Family is sanctuary.
As I write this, I can’t help but feel heavy hearted because I wasn’t there. I was five hundred miles south, piecing together my own NEW traditions. Coach, Babycakes, Fur Baby, & I had dinner with friends. It was a day of prayer, friendship, laughter, and ham, of course.
My emotions ran high today as I thought about my family up north, held my sweet baby in my arms, sat next to my husband in church, and thought of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice. I couldn’t help but to feel blessed — and I had a lump in my throat to prove it.
It’s hard to be away from the excitement of “home”, but part of growing up and having a family is starting your own traditions.

What are your favorite Easter traditions?
