True Winter & Christmas Magic

It’s a new year, but let’s rewind for a moment…

For Christmas, we traveled to Pennsylvania to see my family for the week.  Packing wasn’t too difficult because Santa got my telegram indicating that all packages be delivered down the chimney at Nana & Papa’s house.  However, there was one item of immediate concern:  getting Bazella {our Elf on the Shelf} north without losing his magic.

The morning that we were packing the van, I shoved Bazella into my purse with the plan of relocating him to a cup holder for the trek north.  It was still early and all the little critters were still snug in bed… or so we thought.  It seems that Ellie operates in stealth mode these days.  As Coach was attempting to remove Bazella from my bag, he got caught “ELF HANDED“.  He immediately dropped Bazella, then dropped to his knees like a rescuer at the scene of an accident.

“MOM!  Something terrible has happened!” Ellie shouted to me through the shower door.  Luckily, her daddy’s magical tale of recuperation worked.  She is SUCH a believer and all was right in the world again with Bazella safely riding in the back of our Volkswagen.

And Christmas morning… well, it seems that Santa really outdid himself this year.

Her first reaction to seeing a Barbie jeep in my parents’ music room?  Pure shock.

My reaction to seeing her fly down the driveway and hop the curb?  Pure pee… in my pants… from laughing so hard.  Pregnancy will do that to a girl.

Ellie thumbs up Christmas morning

It was definitely a thumbs up kind of Christmas morning for a very sweet four year old.  And the icing on the cake for a great week at Nana & Papa’s?

SNOW.  And lots of it.

Her enthusiasm for the snow never waned.  It reminded me of growing up in Pennsylvania and the way we would play for hours despite frozen toes & fingers.  Only the promise of hot chocolate & a roaring fire could lure us back in the house.

I never realized how much I miss the snow until this moment.  The snow slows everyone down… invites you to disconnect from the outside world into a winter wonderland of snowballs & sleds, giggles & marshmallows.  True winter.

And maybe… just maybe…we’ll get it back.
