In making my preparations for homeschooling Ellie this year, there is one thing that I ABSOLUTELY, MUST keep in mind:
She is not in kindergarten.
The teacher in me wants to show her the entire world, to read every great work of children’s literature, teach her phonics, French, piano, and go on amazing field trips. The mom in me knows, that in everything, we must start at the very beginning.
We started our morning working on our color book. Ellie searched for pictures of red items in magazines and then practiced her scissors skills.
“I really love doing school with you, Mom,” she said as we sat side by side working on puzzles in the playroom. I love watching her wheels turn.
A whole summer full of no schedule and never having clean underwear and too much Caillou is no way to live a life. Our little schedule posted on the refrigerator may look like it’s for Ellie, but it’s for me, too.
{Making our own pre-reading books.}
There’s a sense of peace in knowing that you’re not supposed to be anywhere else in the world other than under a pile of library books. This investment pays dividends of enormous value. And as we end our day and I reflect on everything that we’ve accomplished since breakfast, I can’t help but to feel like a very rich woman.

Had to giggle at the “no clean underwear!” Sounds like my house this summer.
Your schedule looks like something doable- good luck this year!
