Three mornings ago, I burst into tears at the thought of dropping her off for kindergarten.
Two mornings ago, I read the local school district’s policy on food allergies and sobbed.
Yesterday, I cried just because she makes me so happy.
If you’re wondering if she’s going to preschool this year, the answer is this: not a chance.
I often blame my desire to homeschool Ellie on her late September birthday or the price of preschool, but the truth is this: I can’t bare the thought of sending her to school and missing out on the play-by-play action she provides when she draws, or the excitement in her voice when she’s beating me at Memory, or the stories she tells me on a walk.
Oh, but what about her social skills? Aren’t you worried? Preschool is so good for their social skills.
I have taught preschool. Preschool is a good place to learn more potty words.
Oh, sure… lots of preschools are great, but they’re filled with kids who eat PB&J and parents who accidentally leave peanuts in their kids’ backpacks and well, friends… I’m just not willing to risk it. Plus, back to my first point: I want to be her first teacher & explore the world right alongside her.
“Are you going to be my teacher, Mommy,” Ellie asked me the other day.
“I am,” I said. “Is that okay with you?”
“Yeah! Let’s do school right now!” she exclaimed and headed to the dining room to retrieve her books.
It’s an exciting time in our house. There’s a creative energy pulsating through our walls — I try to remind myself that it’s “energy” and not “chaos”. And last night, when Ellie read books to her Daddy {instead of the other way around}, I knew that we are making the right choice.

My youngest is allergic to peanuts. Last year at his preschool, the director of the preschool brought in cake pops for her son’s birthday. Her son happened to be in my son’s class. When I arrived there, the teacher asked if it were okay for my son to have a cake pop. I asked for the ingredients list, and there wasn’t one, even though school policy requires there be one for items like that.
I lost my ever loving mind that day.
He still goes to preschool there. But they are afraid of me. Very afraid.
I know that I can’t protect him forever from peanuts, so I choose to continue sending him.
Sigh.

Bravo! Whatever decision you make for your family is the right one. It’s YOUR family, after all. Have a wonderful adventure. NC is a fabulous state to homeschool in-so many resources!
Troy never went to preschool and he was reading the paper at 4 years old…remember that? Who needs preschool when you have a mommy that wants to help you learn all you can and a mommy who will always keep you safe!
You will love it! We are starting on Tues- I am looking forward to it. The kids do so much better when we are on our school schedule. Ellie will be an A+ student, I just know it
