You’ve heard of preschools labeling items in the classroom, but have you ever considered labeling items in your home?  With a precocious child on my hands, it’s time to focus on her emerging literacy skills.

A print rich environment is one in which children interact with many forms of print including signs, labeled centers, wall stories, word displays, labeled murals, bulletin boards, charts, poems and other printed materials.

Now it would be ridiculous to label *EVERYTHING* in the house {not to mention visually overstimulating}, so I first made a short list of objects around our house.

Using white sentence strips and a Sharpie marker, I carefully wrote out each word on the strips and then trimmed the excess paper off.

If you fear that your handwriting will be too difficult to read {ahem… if you’re say… a doctor!}, you can always use a computer to print out the words.  Avoid using all capital letters.

Using painter’s tape to adhere your labels will insure that your walls & furniture survive this new print rich environment.  Just a couple pieces rolled up on the back is enough stick-power.

You can read more about Print Rich Environments here and find ways to adapt the information for your home.

  1. You’re such a clever mommy, applying your teaching skills at home! ;) I should totally do that. Lord knows my classroom was always well-labeled. :) I’m working on a cork wreath but haven’t posted pictures yet. I’ll link up when I do a post!
