Toddler Cocktail Party
At 7:30 last evening, at the precise time when we normally read bedtime stories, my daughter was standing at the door greeting our guests. With a milk bottle in hand, she made her way through the crowd without hesitation or concern. She quickly made friends and soon after was stealing pretzels from the hands of our guests. Poor Mr. H — did he get any snacks? Babycakes took his pretzels one-by-one and fed them to her Daddy and Coach C. She was encouraged by the laughter and attention and soon began her next trick — Cheers! She insisted that everyone clink their glass to her bottle over and over and over and over again.
The later it got, the wilder she became. Soon she was bringing Elmo onto the scene. With a few quick gestures and words known only to herself, her Daddy had a red furry puppet on his hand in the middle of the crowd. It’s pretty amazing what kids do to their parents – we’ll do anything for their enjoyment.
“Elmo says go Early Decision!”

This morning, our kitchen looked like a train wreck. I’m always too tired to clean up after the party and wait until morning. Babycakes had a hardy bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and even took on the task of feeding herself. As we washed her hands in the sink, she spied a plate full of chocolate chip cookies.
“Cookie?” she asked.
“Oh, honey.” I replied.
“Peeeeeeeeezzzzz?” she pleaded.
How do you argue with that? So I gave her the smallest cookie I could find and she merrily accepted it. Now, a good mommy would have made her sit in her highchair to eat it, but I was checking my email and feeling lazy. She was playing nearby — what trouble could a cookie get her into? After all, I could hear her crunching and sipping.
Sip, sip, sip, sip…
When I got up from my chair I noticed that her sippy cup was fifteen feet away in the living room.
Sip, sip, sip, sip…
I peeked around the center island and there she was… dipping her cookie in the dog’s water bowl.
Sip, sip, sip, sip…

OH, my gosh…I love it! I’m waiting for the day when mine starts motoring about and finds the dog bowls in the only place we have to put them – the kitchen.

That’s our girl, she’s got them eating out of her hand and wrapped around her pinky. She’ll be on the sideline calling plays by next season!
