Letter to the Baby

by The FW on December 10, 2009

Dear Babycakes,

You are the light of my life, you make everything worthwhile, & I adore spending every moment of your life with you.  That being said, we need to have a discussion about your nighttime activities and why they should NOT include me.

My darling, we all cycle out of sleep every four hours in the night.  When this happens to you, please just roll over and go back to sleep.  It’s not time to read books, watch Elmo, or feed at what you seem to think is a 24 hour buffet line.  And when I am gracious enough to welcome you into my bed, it would be in your best interest to snuggle up and go to sleep.  I don’t care to have my nose picked, my eyelids plucked, or my boobs kicked.

If you sleep at night, which consequently would allow your parents to sleep at night, our family time together would be much more…  energized.  We are exhausted, dear one.  No amount of coffee or diet coke can cure this physical fatigue.  Sleep, my love.

Love always,

Your sleep deprived mother who looks like she has aged ten years in 14 months

Haha, I love this letter. I think I need to give one of these letters to my son!

Let me know if this letter works b/c if it does I’m going to pass it on to my son. He wakes me up at 5am all the time. It’s funny when I first had Bella everyone told me to get used to not sleeping. I found baby-hood so much easier on sleep then now with a 3 year old waking me up. I’m tired. :)

Instead of reading books, watching videos, snacking, or whatever else you do during those middle-of-the-night wake times, try doing absolutely nothing. When the boys used to wake up for no reason (not hungry, not wet, not sick, etc.) we sat quietly, in the dark, and did absolutely nothing – and I mean NOTHING! No talking, no singing, no books, no playing, no touching, and no lights. It took only a couple of nights and they stopped waking up. Think they decided if it was going to be boring, they might as well sleep. Don’t know if it’ll work with Babycakes, but it worked for both of my boys.

Oh no! Here’s to hoping she read the letter and will let you sleep tonight!
