4 squad cars, 1 ambulance, & 2 firetrucks

by The FW on December 15, 2009

Coach has been out on the road recruiting for the past few weeks making home visits to potential Wildcats.  Around noon today, Coach made a surprise visit to OUR house before having to go back out on the road.  Babycakes was in bed, so Coach decided he would close his eyes for just a few minutes, too.

Then the doorbell rang.

I looked out the window to see a woman standing on my porch.  She was older, a bit disheveled, her black hair gray around the ears, and her dark skin was wrinkled.

“Hello, can I help you?” I asked.

“I know your sign says ‘Baby Sleeping’ on your bell there, but I need some help.  I’m lost.”

I put the dog in the house, grabbed a pen & paper, & walked outside to the stranger.  Her car, I quickly learned was parked down the street in our neighbor’s driveway.  She had pulled in there when she saw the police car parked in front of his house.  She was REALLY lost.  She went on to tell me that she had “taken a white woman home from the soup kitchen.  White. Black.  All the same to me, ” she said and had gotten lost.  ”I got in that circle up there and just kept going ’round and ’round and that’s when I knew I was all turned around.”

As we walked back to her car, my police officer neighbor had now joined us.  We tried to explain how to get back to her town.  I tried to draw her a map, but she said she couldn’t really see it.  It was as simple as two turns, but she didn’t understand.  Long story – short, she was diabetic & was an elderly driver with visual restrictions on her license.  Basically, she was confused AND she can’t see.  Officer J called for back up to help get the little lady back to her town.  Soon there were four squad cars.  After a few questions, it was determined (since she didn’t know December was the 12th month or that it was Tuesday) that medic would be called to check her vitals.

With sirens & lights flashing, the first responders turned onto our street — a giant ladder truck.  Five minutes later, an ambulance.  All our neighbors were SO curious, but this happens in a small town with little drama.  Poor grandma…  I guess she was fine because 17 people in uniform let her drive her Pontiac home.

Now, for the second firetruck.

Dinner is in the oven & just moments ago we heard ANOTHER siren…

Y’all!

It was Santa!

We drove past a firetruck pulling Santa in his sleigh on a back road near our house last weekend. Even the kids on the back roads need presents.
That poor old lady. Imagine how embarrassing that must have been for her.

Did Coach and Babycakes sleep through all the excitement?

I hope she got home okay!

Luckily, they were both awake when the EMS vehicles started pulling up. I hope she’s okay, too. I might have to call the soup kitchen and find out who she was!

What excitement! I’m amazed at how kind you were. I wouldn’t have answered the door, honestly…but I live in a not-so-good neighborhood in Nashville. There’s a scam going on where people wander around telling people they “need bus money to get home” or to get to a church…it’s always the same story and you’ll often go back to the same locale and get the same scam. Then there are the people who wander around with gas cans, claiming to have run out of gas. You fall for it the first time and then you see them at that same location the next week, wandering with that gas can looking for money.
