Grocery shopping has become a frustrating chore for me lately. Now that we’ve identified that Babycakes is allergic to food dyes, it takes me FOR-EV-ER to get through the aisles. Ultimately what I’ve found is that…
If God didn’t make it, she can’t eat it.
Can someone please write some legislation to control these food companies? When I bake things at home, I add things like sugar, flour, & eggs to the mixture. Tell me why it’s necessary for “Blue 1 Lake, Blue 2 Lake, Red 40 Lake” and a host of other things I can’t pronounce in BLUEBERRY BAGELS? You’ll be shocked — I encourage you to begin reading the fine print.
If you want to learn more about food dyes, you should go to www.Red40.com. We’re also allergic to plant-based dyes and those are often listed in the ingredients as “natural color”. Ooo… I don’t know if I should tell you this, BUT did you know that there’s a dye that’s made from an insect? That’s all I’m saying. Go to Red40 and get the info first hand. The site was recommended to us by our allergist.

There are few heat & eat foods in our house, but with a little preparation we can make our own. Yesterday, the Football House had delicious mommy made pancakes. The leftovers have been stored for those moments when ‘Cakes is climbing her highchair because she absolutely cannot wait another moment for food. Must eat. 12 seconds in the microwave and they’re almost as good as the morning you first flipped them.
All kids love mac & cheese, but we can’t serve it in our household. The yellow dye to make it that lovely color of orange gives Babycakes itchy hives all over her face. Last night for dinner, we made “Cheesy Orzo” from Rachael Ray’s files. I’d like to rename it “Better than Macaroni & Cheese”. Or perhaps more fitting, “Toddler Feast”. Babycakes ate her own & then begged for her daddy’s. We gave her seconds. It was so good that the dog received nothing under the table. I’ll add the recipe to the recipe section — go check it out!

I love that site! It was very helpful when I started changing our diet as well. I use Annie’s Mac and Cheese when I don’t make my own. The yellow box has natural coloring but the purple box is white cheddar and no coloring at all!
The hardest thing for us right now are birthday parties because cake has dye in it not just the frosting. We have a special treat at school for A to have when there is a party.
Lis — Babycakes still breaks out in hives with Annie’s purple box. My only guess is that it’s the “natural flavoring” — whatever that means!?
We had crazy hives on her birthday. Her next cake will be made from scratch!!
What a bummer about the dyes for poor Babycakes and the fam! I’ve often wondered why they must be included in pre-made foods… are we such slaves to aesthetics that we will only eat pretty things? Am I that shallow? The research certainly can’t be wrong – so I must be. Great. There goes my day.
