Ladies Night In

Remember “Ladies Night”?  Hair done, lipstick, black pants, revealing shirt…

Then babies came on the scene.

Coach left for work in what I would consider the middle of the night — before 5 am.  Right about the time that his alarm clock went off (4:15 am), Babycakes decided that she would also like to wake up.  Think again, sista.  Here’s a toy — go back to bed.

Needless to say, our days are long.  However, we are blessed to have good friends to spend time with and today was one of those days.  Lauren & I are trying to be creative (dangerous) and make football game day t-shirts for the babies, so this afternoon we headed to Michael’s craft store.  Before our shopping trip, we decided it might be in our best interest to feed the beasts babies.

Two matching macaroni & cheese lunches were ordered.  Two high chairs, two large plates, two opportunities to throw those plates…  Who knew that noodles could fly?  And napkins?  And straws?  How nice to not be alone when my 11 month old is rioting in the middle of the deli!  At one point Lauren quipped to the table next to us, “This is great birth control for y’all!”  Can we say naptime, anyone?

Lauren & her baby came over for dinner tonight and we put a new spin on “Ladies Night.”  No makeup, no tight pants, and certainly no lipstick.  Just two babies, a naughty dog, and a lot of zucchini.

My mom has had the same best friend since the disco era.  She & Lori have done everything together — travel, perm their hair, have babies, drink A LOT of coffee, become neighbors, & then more recently become grandmas.

When I was little, I was sure that Lori had a special gift only to be given by God Himself — the keen ability to speak under her breath.  She could (can) speak so softly that only my mother could understand what she was saying.  This infuriated me because I knew they were talking about something important.  Or maybe they were talking about me!  Either way, I wanted to know — needed to know.  Gossip.  I lived for it in kindergarten.

Our families spent so much time together when we were kids that we all loved & fought like siblings.  Everyone always wanted the Donald Duck cup and guess what?  No one ever got it.  We all wanted the chocolate milk bottle toy, too and it always ended up 4 feet above us on the window sil.  Those moms…  they fixed us.

More than thirty years of friendship have passed and still the coffee is poured while the next generation plays nearby.  Do you know what they’d tell us?  Enjoy it girls because time goes by all too fast.  Relish in each and every moment — even the ones that seem tiresome.  I can just hear them now saying…

“What the hell?  When did we become grandmas!??”
