Distraction & Obsession

by Sara on July 17, 2009

I’ve been a little distracted lately and this is why…

See how sweet she is?

There’s just one little “problem” that we have right now.

She’s obsessed.

She’s especially obsessed with me — particularly at 1 & 4 in the morning.  And in the car, at the library, shopping, playing on the floor — we must be in constant contact, always touching for her to remain at peace.  I will likely need shoulder surgery from all the hand holding we do while I’m driving and a straight jacket from the lack of sleep, but as long as Baby’s happy, everybody’s happy.

She continues to be infatuated with all things that pose a danger to herself.  The plant stand in the dining room, electrical outlets (she is determined to remove those plastic plugs), kitchen drawers, toilet plunger, wicker shelving, THE STAIRS… there are hidden hazards throughout the house.  It’s not that our house is unsafe, it’s just that our baby is like a clever criminal.  Before we know it, she’ll be making hooch in the bathroom from the leftover fruit she stored in her bellybutton.

While the stairs are captivating and the fireplace intriguing, there is nothing more exhilarating than this:

012

She can’t get it out of her head.  She craves its lamb & rice flavor, it’s crunch, the way it feels in her mouth.  I removed four kibbles this morning (all on different occasions) and had to place the bowl of it on the counter top 14 times.  FOURTEEN.  The dog is starving.  She can be two rooms away and suddenly she’ll make a bee line for the kitchen.  Plod. Plod. Plod.  When the food is gone, she takes up splashing in the water dish.  This morning, she dumped the whole bowl of water, giggled, danced in it, and then ShamWow-ed it with her bottom.

This is why my house looks like a bullet train barreled through it.  This is why nothing gets accomplished during the day.

And this…

is why I don’t care.

I hope my child looks back on today
and remembers a Mommy who had time to play
There will be years for cleaning and cooking
But children grow up when we are not looking
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
Babies grow fast, we learn to our sorrow
So settle down cobwebs, dust go to sleep
I’m cuddling my baby, and babies don’t keep
