Coach works A LOT. If he could get paid hourly, we would be millionaires. I received an email recently from a high school coach’s wife who asked me about the working hours of a college football coach. During the season, it’s brutal. He is out the door some mornings before 6 am and doesn’t return home until 8:30 in the evening.
This is why I’ve chosen to create my own job — someone in this family has to be flexible! We have coaching friends who don’t have the luxury of flexibility. Every time their child becomes ill at daycare, someone has to miss work. That someone is usually a HER because coaches can’t leave the office. There are no substitutes, no fill-ins.
Babycakes, Furbaby, and I have our own office that we staff each afternoon. Furbaby notifies us when a student has arrived and then Babycakes steps in to greet everyone. As the children unpack their books, Furbaby gets his belly rubbed while Babycakes crawls underneath the piano bench. When the books are open and we’re ready to play, Furbaby takes his seat on the east side of the bench. He feels that it is his responsibility to provide moral support for all pianists. Meanwhile on the floor, Babycakes has moved onto eating correcting music theory homework while simultaneously pressing the damper pedal.
Beautiful chaos… and my students love it.
Our “office” continues to evolve — my job seems to have no limits. We have two new piano students & MIGHT be adding “homeschooling” to our list of services. Babycakes is particularly excited about the homeschooling opportunity because it will likely mean some pretty cool field trips!
