Keep Your Honey Healthy!
Recently, Coach brought an article home to me about the overall health of football coaches. Ladies, it is not looking good for the coaching profession!
Health of Coaches Increasing Concern
by Len Pasquarelli for ESPN.com
Here is an excerpt:
“When you think of professions generally related to high stress, I typically find them to be jobs where there is some threat to life,” Dr. Taylor said. “Air traffic controllers, surgeons, those are professions that, by their nature, mandate having people’s lives in your hands, very literally. Coaches aren’t so much dealing with a threat to life, although they do control, with [personnel] moves, the futures of men. But to me, it’s more a threat to ego that they experience. And when your ego is threatened, you dig in, work harder, try to do more and that’s the cycle. Long hours. Poor eating habits. No exercise. Being overweight and out of shape. All those things add up. Honestly, I don’t know how these guys have any family life at all. They’ve either got very indulgent wives or they end up divorced, I suppose.”

Had they interviewed me, I could have given MY expert opinion about how to keep your coach from having a stroke! Football coaches work hard — how many people can say that their job security is dependent upon a winning outcome on 11 Saturday afternoons? Of course there’s stress involved in coaching. The question is how do you keep the stress from consuming your husband?
Encourage healthy eating habits!
- Maybe that means being “Wife of the Year” and packing him a heart healthy lunch to take to the office. I promise, it’s worth it to keep his heart ticking.
- Pack a picnic lunch/dinner & have family dinner time at the office!
- Stock his office mini-fridge with good for you foods like yogurt, raw almonds, water, & veggies.
Exercise, Exercise, Exercise!
- Working out is a great way to reduce stress & I betcha there’s a treadmill near your Coach’s office!
- Exercise as a family — family bike rides, hiking, & walking are great ways to spend time together. It’ll show your children, too, that staying healthy & fit is important in your family.
Time Out for Family
- If you’re lucky enough to work from home or stay at home with your children, stop by to see Daddy at the office. It brightens their day!
- Eat dinner together!
- Play!
- Laugh!
- Go to church as a family — YES, even during the season!!
