Daddy’s Little Girl

A Girl!
Being a football family, it never crossed my mind that we might have a girl baby. I was prepared for a little boy who would want to wear football cleats to church and whose first word would undoubtedly be, “Touchdown.” He’d run around the stadium, a carbon copy of his Dad, yelling at the men in stripes.
“We’re having a cheerleader,” Coach would say throughout my pregnancy. Okay, fine, but she’s going to be an Ivy League Cheerleader! Babycakes is turning 7 months old and her dynamic personality is beginning to show. She is adorable, curious, demanding, and full of energy. She loves meeting new people, pulling dog hair, & discovering new uses for ordinary objects. This morning, she was teething on a closed & empty bottle of Listerine.
Her temper is fiery — it took an hour to get her down for a nap this morning. At one point, she tore off her pajama pants and threw them at me. This image I’ve had of a girl in pig tails in a cheerleading outfit is fading. I’m starting to think that she’s going to be more like the Coach’s daughter in “Remember the Titans.” Imagine that sweet little face throwing her visor in a fit of anger over a penalty flag, yelling at the referees, & calling her own plays. She might be wearing a cheerleading outfit, but she’ll probably want black under her eyes. Her birthday parties will likely be held at 5th quarter events instead of a tea party. Maybe she’ll bring her new American Girl doll to the field to keep her company! But, maybe she’ll make mudcakes with it. She could insist on carrying a little purse to the game, but maybe it’s just to sneak tailgating snacks into the game.
One thing is for sure — our love for this baby girl. We will love her and support her throughout her entire life… and we’ll probably even let her wear her cleats to church.
