Small Town Living

While visiting Carolyn Allen’s new & improved The Coach’s Wife website, I came across her blog post about the ups & downs of living & coaching in a small town.

I grew up in a small town where summers were spent barefootin’ & two seating on banana-seat bicycles.  We played outside and activities were unstructured — days were spent at the ballfield and the community pool while evenings were for playing night games.  As soon as the lightning bugs began to glow, we knew it was time to head outside for neighborhood jailbreak.  I miss those days…

I am far from the hometown that raised me, but I am proud to be a part of a new small-town community.  I like that the friendly folks at the bank know our name when we walk in & that Miss Rosie and Miss Beverly at the library always make a point to “goo-goo-gah-gah” at Babycakes.  When we stroll along downtown, it feels like we’re “going visiting”.  Sometimes we visit too long at some of the shops & we run out of time for running errands.  This is likely why I never have stamps.

During football season, the local merchants flew our school colors outside their shops.  The couple who owns our favorite restaurant in town took pictures of Babycakes at our last visit & “Uncle” Mario makes it to all our home games.

I LOVE A SMALL TOWN

  • folks open doors & help you with your stroller
  • you can bike into town without getting plowed over
  • Saturday Farmers’ Market — I love a good eggplant!
  • you know half the kids in the downtown parades
  • little shops & friendly owners
  • neighbors & kids playing OUTSIDE!
